Our next stop was the little town of Schiltach, tucked deep in the Black Forest. Its historic center may be small, but it packs plenty of charm. The highlight is the Rathaus (town hall), famous for its beautifully painted façade that looks straight out of a storybook.
We parked by the quiet river, crossed the bridge, and walked up into the square. From there, the view opens up to steep streets lined with half-timbered houses, built in the traditional Fachwerk style that has defined German towns for centuries. The square itself sits on the slope of a hill, giving the whole scene a layered, postcard feel.
We spotted the town’s Apothecary Museum, which explores the history of medicine and pharmacy, but decided to pass this time. Instead, we enjoyed wandering the cobbled lanes, soaking in the atmosphere of a town that feels largely untouched by time.
👉 Fun fact: Schiltach’s history is tied to timber rafting on the Kinzig River, which once carried logs all the way to the Rhine and down to the Netherlands for shipbuilding.
Final stop today: Villingen.
